Social Work Licensure

Social Work Licensure Requirements by State

Each state has its own requirements when it comes to becoming a certified social worker or a licensed social worker.  Minimum education level, curriculum, fieldwork and supervised hours are among some of the things that each state requires of aspiring Social Workers.  The social work program you choose must also specifically meet your state’s requirements.  The last thing you want to do is waste time and money on a program that does not meet the requirements of the state you plan to practice in after graduation.  Every social work program should list all of these requirements in their program overview and description, as well as their graduation outcomes.  If they do not, it will be your responsibility to find out from the school directly if they meet your state’s social work licensing requirements.  Each state may also have continuing education requirements depending on your level of social work education and your career experience.
