Overview of the Bachelors in Social Work – Degree and Career Guide
By earning your Bachelors in Social Work online, you’ll be prepared to practice as a general Social Worker serving the needs of people with different backgrounds. You may work with families, individuals (children, teenagers or adults) or groups of people addressing a common issue. You’ll also work with people from different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.
A bachelor’s degree in social work is the minimum degree you need to become a Social Worker. You’ll have a strong foundation in human services, sociology, anthropology, social welfare and policy, chemical dependency, and assessment and intervention techniques and strategies. Having a Bachelors in Social Work will also prepare you for graduate study, specifically to earn your Masters in Social Work.
While many Social Work programs have a specific curriculum, you may be able to take additional courses if you have free electives available. You may take courses in related subject areas such as psychology, health science, human services, sociology or counseling. In addition to the required courses you’ll take while completing your BSW online, you may be required to complete a minimum amount of field hours before graduating from your Social work program.
Admission Requirements for a BSW degree
Gaining admission to a Bachelors in Social Work program online will vary by school. Schools will require a minimum high school GPA, SAT scores, high school transcripts, a completed online school application and an application fee. Some schools may require a written statement. Be sure to check each school’s requirements.
Admission Requirements for a BSW completion degree
A bachelor’s degree completion in Social Work is different from the traditional BSW degree. A degree completion program requires one of the following:
- You have an Associate degree in a social science program such as Human Services
- You have a minimum of 60-80 transferable credit hours.
The program may also require a minimum GPA from your previous college. If you already have an Associates degree or are completing enough credits to gain admission to a degree completion program, this type of social work program may be a good fit. Please check with your program.
